So I don’t ever review products but this helmet is ultra next level.For comparison I have or have owned the Smith Trace MIPS Korydid, POC Spin Ventral, POC Ventral MIPS, POC Tempus MIPS, Kask Wasabi, Kask Protone, Sweet Protection Aero Falconer 2Vi MIPS, and Closca Classic Visor.First impressionsFirst thing I noticed is that it weighs next to nothing. Are other helmets made of lead? It’s impressively lightweight. Then you notice that a maniac designed this with thoughtfulness attention to detail like I’ve never known in a helmet. The instructions are extensive. In typical Japanese understatement they don’t even advertise that it comes with an “Ultra Sweat Pad” that you can swap into the helmet to give the forehead extra grip and not slide, or the optional internal “Anti-Insect Netting: For a person who values fitting” to tastefully keep insects out of the vents lol. The instructions are extremely precise, careful, and incredibly unassuming. I mean there is even a sticker in the helmet with a clear arrow telling you which way is forward lol.FitOnce I installed the ultra sweat pad and the sunglasses grippers I started the fitting process. I’ve only seen such fine fitting adjustments on prosthetic limbs! You can really dial this thing in in so many ways. The instructions detail a dozen ways to adjust it, and why you would want to do so for each. The boa system in the rear is really nice, easy to grip, the easiest to turn I’ve known, and more effective than any other I’ve known too. Plus the instructions detail how you can reposition where it attaches inside to grip beneath the rear ridge of your head, preventing any sliding up. I think I can dial the fit in more, I’ve only been on one ride so far. But already I’ve adjusted the strap so it’s perfectly around my ears and not flapping around, the rear grip system, the front pad, everything feels so perfect! It’s really comfortable despite that this helmet is made intentionally more round than oval. My head is a long oval, so yes it does feel a bit different when I think about it and I wish it fit closer at the sides, but it looks great and feels great. It fits really close to my head up top. Despite being hyper sensitive to “mushroom head” helmets this one looks less mushroomy than all of my other helmets besides the Sweet Protection Falconer 2Vi.It’s so light! Blows away all my other helmets! I didn’t think I’d notice just a handful of grams but you can’t help but breathe a breath of fresh air the difference is so big. It makes me feel like I was too heavy on my bike before lol. Between the weight and the fit you forget it’s there!Out of all my helmets only the Sweet Protection Falconer 2Vi holds my sunglasses better, these grippers work really well with my Oakley Clifdens.I ordered the ARS-3 photochromatic wind shield which should be lighter than the wind shield that came with it, and transition better in changing light conditions. I’m looking forward to it! The magnetic attachments are so intuitive whether you’re stashing the shield above or using it. Holds it firm and there’s no messing it up! Unfortunately the box had neither a helmet bag nor a microfiber pouch or hard case for the wind shield, which to me is a huge oversight because the shield is way too big to fit in a normal sunglasses case. That was disappointing. I hope there is a case or pouch for the photochromatic shield which is coming soon.The finish is exquisite! I got the “all white” which is a beautiful pearl finish I was hoping for to match my pearl Toyo Godzilla. The strap is of a very noticeable high quality, as is the buckle. Before it arrived I thought of upgrading to the Fidlock but I won’t, this is really nice. And it has two perfect silicone strap keepers. This is the first helmet I’ve ever been able to perfectly adjust the straps on vis-à-vis my ears, chin, cheeks, whatever.PerformanceOk so for the fun part, which I was absolutely not expecting or paying attention to before it stunned me: performance. I immediately went on a ride in 15mph headwinds with 35mph gusts. Wow! Ok yes its characteristics are exaggerated in such a wind tunnel but that’s the perfect testing ground. First of all, it is trippy and so impressive to feel strong wind resistance everywhere on your torso and not your head! It was like my head wasn’t there! This was very unexpected and surprising. I figured marginal gains over my other helmets, especially since the POC, Protone, Wasabi, and Sweet Protection are all “aero” or “semi-aero” helmets. But no, the difference was stark. Second, despite wearing my usual cycling cap underneath the helmet, it was incredible to feel the air rushing through the top air channel and cooling my head even though the plastic air path plate is inside! Despite being more closed than all my other helmets, it’s the most breathable of them all. I truly cannot believe it. Felt like a long ice cube atop my head right where that plate is. Goes to show you that you don’t need direct cooling to cool. The airflow is such that the velocity of the air passing through pulls the air out the back from around your head. With the weightlessness and fit adjustment options it’s just the best helmet I never knew was possible. Looking forward to riding in my regular eyeglasses with the ARS-3 photochromatic wind shield.Use in the stableI think in the end I’ll use the Wasabi closed when it rains or when it’s cold since it’s so warm, the Falconer 2Vi open for commuting because of the super high Virginia Tech safety rating, and this Kabuto for everything else. Although the Kabuto doesn’t have MIPS or a review on the Virginia Tech system (I wrote them to request it) it is certified by the Japanese safety standard, which if all the other attention to detail on this helmet is any indication, is probably safer than all other helmets including at NASA and F1.SummaryThis thing is special. Like a custom moulded medical device. It’s one of those few things in life you’re so awed by that you keep all documentation in the box even though you don’t know why and have digital copies.RatingAero Performance: 5/5Weight: 5/5Finish: 5/5Fit: 4.75/5 (just wish there was a regular oval version but I’m splitting hairs)Airflow: 5/5Swag factor: 5/5 (looks fast, looks high quality, and no one else has these stateside)
