Let me preface by stating that although I consider myself somewhat knowledgeable in terms of home theater set-up, gear and theory, I am no audio-/videophile and have only been seriously interested in this stuff for a couple of years (and by seriously, I mean able to actually afford it). I recently upgraded my system with theOnkyo HT-RC180 7.2-Channel Receiveras well as a pair of Paradigm Sutdio 10 bookshelf speakers. Because I live in an apartment, I initially decided against a subwoofer. However, after watching a few movies, I realized that despite the excellent bass extension offered by the Paradigms, a subwoofer would be necessary for satisfactory enjoyment.Sound ImpressionsI first attached the Polk to the LFE out on my Onkyo with a standard subwoofer cable. You will get a few more db's of volume by using a Y-splitter RCA cable, but the sound quality will be identical whichever method you choose. I set the crossover all the way up on the sub to avoid any chance of interference with the work of the receiver and set the volume to about one fourth of way around the dial. I ran the Audyssey calibration through the Onkyo and decided to pop Iron Man on Bluray into my PS3. I was shocked that I had to actually turn the bass DOWN, figuring it would be relatively weak at such a low volume setting. Now again, I do live in an apartment and am considerate of my neighbors. It was about 10PM when I first tried this puppy out, so I turned it almost all the way down and decided to test another day. For small rooms, there is no doubt that this subwoofer is plenty capable. I hate boomy, unrefined bass and was very surprised at how controlled the PSW10 is considering the barely-entry-level price. I will admit I have not tried using this with stereo music as I feel my Paradigms adeptly handle my genre selections (mostly classical and film scores), but it is likely that music will make any deficiencies more evident. There is some port noise if you crank it, but ideally listeners should not be aware of a subwoofer in an AV system, rather it should blend with the satellites. Thus, if you are hearing port noise, the sub is turned up louder than it should be for optimal listening.Build QualityAbsolutely superb. I would be happy if a $300-400 subwoofer looked and felt so good.DesignI ordered the Cherry model and really appreciate the nice finish. I do not, however, like the faux aluminum (i.e. painted plastic) cover on the front. The shiny silver woofer looks very cool, but I very rarely like painted plastic intended to look like metal on anything, so I keep the nice mesh cover in place.I could offer a more detailed review, but why bother? For $100, there are no worthy competitors. At this price point, even $25 is a significant step up and you will not do any better without spending considerably more than that. Purchased this Polk PSW10 subwoofer online for $99 delivered. It's being used to fill in the missing low end of our Sharp HT-SB300 soundbar. It greatly improves upon what was already sounding like a substantial upgrade to our LG 42" plasma TV's mediocre factory speakers. It took about an hour's worth of listening to, and adjusting the sub's settings to make it blend seamlessly with the soundbar, yet not be overly dominating in a small (12' x 12') living room. This subwoofer has enough punch to rattle the windows and annoy your neighbors, if that's what you're after. I haven't yet had the need (nor the nerve) to turn it up past one half. It sounds great at just about 1/4 to 1/3 volume. Not at all like the trunk of a teenager's car. Just a nice, deep thump and roar during movie explosions (bombs and gunfire in 'Letters From Iwo Jima' sounded and felt incredible), and strong, smooth bass notes from music (a Jeff Beck concert video sounded fantastic). I like the way its power is almost felt more than it is heard, at a moderate volume level. I've had no problems with noise from its front mounted port. The speaker's lack of shielding (even though an Amazon misprint erroneously claims the PSW10 is shielded) has not been an issue, mounted 20" from the TV.At approximately 14" cubed, it is compact enough to be visually unobtrusive in a small room. And though its attractive cabinet construction is only 'pleather' glued to junky MDF (the Spam of wood products; made from 'wood flour' and glue), instead of higher quality cherrywood veneer plywood, the vinyl 'cherry' contact paper finish doesn't seem fake until you touch it. It scuffs however, if you just LOOK at it too hard. (Even if it appears to be a potential end table, avoid the temptation to rest a potted plant or cold beverage on it. Water is the mortal enemy of anything built from MDF.) Furniture, this is not.But for under a hundred bucks, the addition of this good looking, deceptively powerful 50 watt subwoofer is one of the easiest, least expensive, and dramatic improvements that can be made to a small home theater or modest audio setup in need of some additional bass.

This is a nice little subwoofer. If you note the specs (35-200Hz), it really doesn't provide the kind of extreme deep bass most folks (read: men) want for their home theater systems. If you want that, opt for the PSW505 (23-160Hz) which right now isn’t much more costly. Though do note the dimensions before ordering; both are way bigger than the driver-size might suggest. Some have commented that below 50Hz this smaller model is a bit on the muddled side, and the situation for me looks like this. I own two of these 10" models, and when paired with smaller bookshelf speakers, they do a great job of kicking in the lower musical registers. For example, I have a bedroom system where this is paired with Energy CB-5 Bookshelf Speakers, really outstanding for clarity considering their tiny size, that I bought for 1/2 list in the palmy days when Amazon Gold Box Deals offered this kind of thing if you were willing to buy within 30 minutes. On the other hand, in my kitchen I have one of these working with a pair of Klipsch RB-600s, and honestly when you have a pair of bookshelf speakers with that much punch and range, I'm not sure this sub does much work, though it occupies a lot of space! The Klipsch have a range of 45-23k Hz, so by the time this type of entry-priced sub kicks in, it doesn't have much work to do that it's really designed to do well. When I switch it off, yes there's an audible difference, but again I wonder if this sub is earning its footprint. Another important note: If you do want this--and btw the cherry finish is really very nice--put it in your Amazon cart and keep watching it. For some reason the price on this subwoofer is perhaps the most volatile on Amazon. Keep checking every day, and one morning you'll see it drop to $99.99--and then that afternoon double to its standard Amazon price. At $99.99, paired with small bookshelf speakers, or as the sub for a modest, small-room home-theater system, this is without question a good deal.

There is a reason why the Polk PSW10 is selling for so cheap, and it is not because it is a great sub. What you are paying for in the PSW10 at this price range is mostly the build quality of the object. The PSW10 sounds terrible, and that is why they are blowing these things out for so little money. I have heard numerous subwoofers from multimedia speaker sets that cost less than $100 for the whole system that sound better than the Polk PSW10.DO NOT BUY THIS SUB IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE IT FOR MUSIC. You will be very disappointed. The sound is so flabby and slow that it even sounds like the sub is hitting behind the beat some of the time. The quality of sound reproduction above 120hz is absolutely terrible, and around 115hz or so there is an abrupt volume differential which you can confirm easily if you run some tones through the sub with a tone generator -- it is extremely quiet until you get down to around 115hz and then it is abruptly very loud. If you are going to listen to only from 50hz-100hz then this sub sounds "ok" in that range, although still quite flabby and not with clear tones at all or even volume across the frequency range. The sub is still loud below 50hz, but the sound becomes really muddy. It's just a terrible, terrible sub -- I think it would make almost anyone's sound system sound worse (if the system already has full range speakers). If you are using it in an entertainment center to listen to movie sounds then maybe all you need is that low rumble and it won't matter that much to you, but if you are sensitive at all about sound quality you will hate this sub.As far as power goes, I can't understand any complaints about it, it will shake my house if I want it to, as long as we are talking about frequencies in the 35-100hz range. Above 100hz it is quieter, and above about 115hz it is EXTREMELY quiet and inarticulate. All in all, like I said, if you have full range speakers already then this will almost certainly make your system sound worse. If you just want it to generate some booms and rumbles when you are watching movies it will shake the room a bit. It's hard to understand why a seemingly well built product would be this poor in quality when it comes to its one functional aspect, but as far as sound reproduction goes this sub is terrible. Loose, muddy, slow, inarticulate -- the PSW10 will make your system sound worse than it did without a sub. Obviously when a sub that lists at $250 ends up being sold in volume for $75, someone at Polk screwed the pooch in a major way.I was looking for a deal, but this is no deal -- you get what you pay for.
