These C-pillar quarter panel trims, in conjunction with the rear door handle trims, look amazing…However, be very mindful that you will need to place them with double-sided tape and then check the gaps between the C-pillar trims and the car’s paint on both the top and bottom, as well as on 3 of the corners (top corners on the boot side and door side, and the bottom corner on the door side).Once you’ve affixed the SecondStage trims and identified the areas where the edges make contact with the car’s paint, you can use masking tape to mark off points A and B where you’ll need to lathe the SecondStage trim. To do this, you’ll need to remove the entire factory-fitted C-pillar trim from the vehicle, which is attached by six very strong door clips, with the SecondStage trim already attached to it. I found that starting from the boot side first, while ensuring support on the door side, helps prevent any damage to the main factory trim. You’ll then need to lathe both sides down significantly on the top edge corners. On both the passenger and driver’s sides, I had to shave down the bottom inner curved edge considerably—more so on the driver’s side—as it was touching the paint and could have caused damage through rubbing. The trims were positioned correctly, as they tuck into one another, but even when positioned as high as possible to allow clearance while still maintaining ample space at the top, they still made contact with the bottom inner curved edge. This suggests that the issue lies with the manufacturing of these pieces, not their placement. Therefore, SecondStage’s claim that they manufacture these trims from the factory-fitted C-pillar trims seems somewhat exaggerated. I’ve had to remove the entire factory-fitted trim with the SecondStage trim attached several times to make adjustments through lathing in order to achieve proper fitment and maintain an appropriate gap all around.I’m now in the process of wedging a thick piece of masking tape covered in felt tape between the upper edge corners—both on the door opening corner and the hatch opening corner—while leaving the car in the sun to bend the corners back out creating a fraction more room. I found that the gap between these corners was still slightly too close. When initially pulling out the door side corner, the boot side upper corner flexed inward, making contact with the car. To address this, I’ve gapped both to reshape them correctly. I believe this is due to the inner upper edge being slightly warped outward, which pushes the outward corners inward towards the vehicle’s paint. If you care about your car’s paint and don’t want these C-pillar trims rubbing and causing long-term damage, be aware that these trims are not a quick application. They require multiple removals involving, lathing, cleaning, refitting, checking and repeat. So far, it’s taken me hours to ensure proper clearance. To shave the product’s edges appropriately, you’ll need a very sharp utility knife with a fresh blade, a steady hand and an eye for detail. Angle the top edge body of utility knife at about 45° in the direction you’re shaving, dragging the blade behind it to avoid cutting into and damaging the trim. Maintain a steady, fluid motion. For me, it took several passes, using firm pressure to remove significant material and lighter pressure to refine and round off the edges. When done correctly, you wouldn’t even notice that it’s been lathed. Ensure you wear PPE such as protective eyewear, an N95 mask, and cut-resistant gloves.I’m giving 2 stars because while they look amazing, they have required a substantial amount of work and my time, even after being positioned correctly and following the included instructions. It also means you have to be confident in removing the entire c-pillar trim in order to remove them as you don’t want to destroy or weaken the adhesive. Maybe I’m the odd person who thinks about these things, but if you’re like me and prefer them fitted correctly with proper clearance between the trim and the car’s paint, this info may be insightful. If you don’t care about your car’s paint and potential rubbing, installation will likely only take about 20 minutes.
